South Bucks panel help Derek to qualify for Paralympics
Remap are hoping, after their success helping Britain's athletes in 2012, to go forward to increase the number of projects they carry out to help athletes and sportsmen and women with disabilities.
A significant project in February 2012 was one by the South Bucks panel to help Derek who lost his legs in Afghanistan in 2007. Following an approach made by Remap to Help for Heroes to see what assistance we could offer to ex-servicemen with disabilities, South Bucks chairman Les Brown was contacted by Alison O'Riordan, a coach with England Athletics. She explained what a talented discus thrower Derek was, a real medal prospect, and asked if Remap could construct a lightweight adjustable throwing frame that would enable Derek to remain seated and support his prosthetic legs while throwing.
Roger Thorn, an engineer with South Bucks, went with Les to meet Alison and Derek at his training centre to see how he was using a throwing frame he had purchased from a friend. Alison was not content with that frame and had ideas on a new design that would be better suited to Derek's individual requirements.
Roger, the Remap volunteer responsible for the design and construction of the frame, said "I was amazed at the energy that Derek produced when throwing the discus and knew that we would have to design a very strong frame, although lightweight. The frame has to be secured to the ground, and Derek has to be secured to the frame". In competition, Derek and an assistant only have a limited time to set up the frame and secure Derek to it.
To allow Derek to adapt and develop his technique, the frame has been made fully adjustable in height and the seat is also adjustable in pitch.
Derek himself told us he loves the frame and says it is very comfortable to use.
The completed frame was delivered to him at the end of February to enable him to use it in the qualifying events for a place in the 2012 London Games at the end of August.

In June Derek won a gold medal at the European Championships beating the Russian World Champion. Unfortunately Derek was not able to repeat this success at the Paralympics. However, we wish Derek all the very best in future competitions.
Helping other athletes
Since Derek trialled his equipment and Remap gave a presentation at a seminar on seated throws given by Alison O’Riordan, six similar requests have come in from disabled athletes around the country.
